Do you see red, black, or nothing at all?
Want to make sure the numbers are making sense?
Many business owners feel they don’t have time to check the numbers. They leave that to someone else in their organisation. But with corporate fraud on the increase, it makes sense to make sure your numbers really do make sense.
The recession has hit a lot of people in their back pockets - even the previously reliable and trusted staff in your office might have a reason to think about taking something from your wallet to line theirs. It's a real and increasing problem for Kiwi SMEs.
But how do you spot a potential fraudster in your office, and what are the warning signs?
Does your finance person have...
- A lot of unused annual leave? If your accounts person never takes a sick day or annual leave, then they may be trying to keep you at arm's-length from your accounts.
- A lot of good excuses as to why you can't get a balance sheet or profit and loss printout at a moment's notice? If you get a lot of pushback on basic accounts requests, then you should look a little deeper.
- Very little interaction with others in the office? A fraudster is often the quietest person in the office.
Other tough questions to ask yourself:
- Do your creditors call about unpaid bills when you had assumed they were paid? Fraudsters often defter paying creditors to pay themselves.
- Are there suppliers in your database you don't recognise? Fraudulent employees often raise fake invoices from non-existent suppliers.
- Do any of your employees have a new and unexplained overly-lavish lifestyle? Or a heightened sense of entitlement? That expensive puppy that everyone loves might have been paid for by you (yes, really - a dog).
We're not here to malign the character of your employees, and the vast majority of the time those trusted staff are just that - trusted staff who want to help you grow your business.
But we are seeing an increase in employee fraud amongst businesses in New Zealand and you're probably too close to your operation to be able to spot it. Which is where we can help. If you are even slightly suspicious that something's not right in your accounts, then contact us today.
